Well done to all Year 1 children for their efforts at our sports afternoon yesterday, they all had great fun and put in 100% effort, thank you to all parents who came along to support their children and make it an enjoyable event! This week in Year 1 we have started our new science enquiry ‘Amazing Animals’ where we are focussing on the different types of animals and their habitats and structure. We have also started a new text type in Literacy where we are looking at fantasy stories, we have read the story the Gruffalo and have been looking at and describing his character. We will be creating our own stories based around this over the next couple of weeks. In PE we have gymnastics coach who comes in on a Monday to work on basic gymnastic skills with the class. We are also learning invasions skills and games on our Friday PE sessions. In Art the children will complete their printing skills work then we will be focussing on the skill of textiles, where we will learn bout joining materials and eventually create our own fantasy animal puppets. Keep checking our blog for updates on our enquiry over the next few weeks!
I would just like to say a huge well done to Year 1 for their super assembly last week, the children were very excited and certainly did us proud with their lovely singing and speaking parts. Thank you to all parents who came along to support us and help with the learning of lines and costumes. In our final week of this half term we will be creating our own group reports about pets using the features and layout of a report such as a title, subheading and factual information. The children are really enjoying exploring non-fiction books and gaining knowledge from the reports they have read in guided reading. In Art we will be continuing with the skill printing and this week we will be using some natural materials to print with outdoors. We will continue to look at fractions and time in maths and carry out some activities to help us think about what we have learnt around these over the half term.
The children have worked so hard this half term and are really showing their readiness for Year 2 now, they should be proud of their hard work and achievements! I look forward to a busy and exciting week with them before our half term holiday!
Year 1 have had an exciting couple of weeks, we have begun our new enquiry all about the enchanted woodlands where we have started to look at plants and trees and have been collecting information from different sources such as photographs, non-fiction books and we have been working in the school grounds to collect leaves and clues, locate and name different plants and find information about the amazing outdoors! In literacy we have been focussing on the text type non-chronological reports, we have been looking at the features of non-fiction books and discussing the layout and learning how to navigate around them to find information. The children have really enjoyed learning lots of facts from these! We have also started creating our own fact file about pets, this week we have been focussing on dogs and creating simple reports about this. We will build up to creating an independent report about the enchanted woodlands including information we have found out about plants and trees in our school grounds. Don’t forget about our class assembly on Thursday 19th May, the children are extremely excited have been working very hard to learn their lines both in school and at home, thank you for your continued support with this. We look forward to seeing you all there!
Year 1 have been enjoying our enquiry all about seaside holidays in the past. Last week they enjoyed creating their holiday homes in their DT session with Mrs Sherlock! We have been very busy in literacy planning our recount of a seaside holiday in the past which the children will write this week in their independent writing journals. They have learnt lots of facts about what a holiday in the past was like from looking at two sources, photographs and non fiction texts. The children are now becoming more confident using non fiction texts and are beginning to recognise the features and layout of these compared to a fiction book. We have been focussing on this in our guided reading sessions too! I hope you have all had an enjoyable bank holiday weekend and I look forward to reading your weekend recounts about all the exciting things you have been doing!
Last week year 1 had an exciting start to our new enquiry, we had ice-cream at our seaside café and made our own puppet show stand! We have been busy making our own menus and recipes in our café too! We have started to look at seaside holidays in the past by looking at some photographs for clues of what a holiday in the past may have been like. This week we will continue with our enquiry and we have got some exciting visitors coming to see us! On Wednesday we will have a ‘Rock pool experience’, look out for photos and updates on the school website and twitter! In literacy we have been looking at the features of a recount and have been sharing recounts of our Easter holidays, day trips and visits to the park. This week we will orally recount out rock pool visit. The children really impressed me with their dance work this week where we focussed on activities you would do at the beach- Well done Year 1!
I hope you have all had a fabulous Easter break! Year 1 have got an exciting few weeks ahead ,our new enquiry is all about seaside holidays! The focus will be to compare a seaside holiday now to one in the past. We will be doing lots of exciting activities based on the seaside across the four weeks of our enquiry so keep looking out for photographs and updates of the activities we have been doing. In Literacy we will be focussing on recounts, both fact and fiction. This week we will learn about what a recount is and its features. We will also be telling our own recounts of what we have been doing over the Easter holidays. I look forward to seeing you all this week!
We had a great afternoon yesterday, the children loved being outdoors and enjoyed learning how to follow a route on a map. They enjoyed observing the map and spotting the things we could see on our route as we walked along. They have shown great interest and enthusiasm in our ‘If you go down to the woods…’ enquiry over the past couple of weeks. It has been lovely to see their mapping skills develop! Tomorrow we will complete our own maps of the playground and we have also developed our own key. Well done Year 1!
I would just like to say a big well done to year 1 for their fabulous performance this morning. They have worked extremely hard to put together their assembly in a short space of time since the holidays. Thank you to all our visitors too it was great to see so many proud faces watching the Year 1 children this morning!
Year 1 have had a busy week this week, we have been focussing on pattern and rhyme in our literacy sessions, we have created our own versions of the story ‘We’re Going on a Bear Hunt’. We have also finished our enquiry about explorers. The children have shown great interest in our enquiry work over the last few weeks and produced some excellent homework based on our famous explorers work, well done! We have also finished our marvellous materials enquiry, the children have worked hard to carry out investigations and explain their findings, talking about why certain materials are good for certain things e.g. to make an umbrella or a pair of curtains. The children should be very pleased with their super hard work and efforts since Christmas, they have really impressed me and I have enjoyed working with them!
Our class assembly will take place the first Thursday back after half term, a reminder letter about costumes will be sent home the first week back. I look forward to seeing you all there on Thursday 25th February at 9.10am.
Have a great week off!
Year 1 made a great start to the Spring term, we have begun to look at fantasy world stories and pick out the characters, setting and magic objects. We have been retelling the stories using actions and have started to think about ways in which we could adapt the stories to make them our own. For our enquiry we have been thinking about how we are all different our enquiry is over two weeks and is called ‘It’s good to be different’ we have been talking about personal differences, the children have really enjoyed thinking about how they are all individual and special in different ways. In maths we have been comparing numbers and using apparatus to help us learn about place value. The children have really impressed me with their hard work and excellent behaviour this week, I look forward to some more learning and fun this week! Well done Year 1!
