This week we have started our new enquiry ‘Why are some places hot and some places cold?’ I am very impressed with the amount of knowledge the children have come back to school with after doing their own research for homework, well done Year 1! In school we will be locating the North and South Poles and talking about their differences, we will also learn what the equator is and locate some hot and cold places on a map or globe. We will also discuss some physical features of hot or cold places in the world. Alongside this enquiry in Literacy we are looking at stories from a range of cultures comparing characters, settings and events to stories we already know. We will then be using some of the ideas to start to write our own stories!
Year 1 have made a fantastic start back after half term! The children have shown great interest in our new enquiry on sculptures and have been using some super vocabulary to describe different types of material, I am very impressed with the homework I have seen on materials so far! This week we will be carrying out an investigation to see which materials are waterproof and which can bend. The children have had great fun using the wall and floor apparatus during our gymnastics lessons and learning the skills of volley ball with our coach, these sessions will continue every Friday for the next 6 weeks. I will add some pictures of us having fun in gymnastics lessons this week!
Welcome back I hope you have all had a fun half term break! This half term our enquiry focus is ‘What is sculpture?’ In Art and DT the children will look at 3D Art work and the different types of materials that sculptures are made from. We will be thinking about the properties of materials in Science and sorting them into groups, we will also investigate how we can change different materials. We will be focusing on information texts in our Literacy sessions where we will look at the features of a non fiction text and how they can be used. We will also be looking at how we can find information online.
Your child’s My Maths homework follows on from the Maths work we have been covering in class giving your child the opportunity to consolidate their learning. I will set the task on a Friday and renew this every two weeks. Please encourage your child to access their My Maths homework and complete it every two weeks.
Year 1 have been very busy this week! The children have enjoyed measuring capacity in Maths comparing which container holds the most and which holds the least. They have also told the story of Cinderella to Reception Class which we have learnt in our Literacy lessons. Next week we will begin to write a recount of the story and think of some ideas for our own fairy tale. The children have enjoyed learning about light in Science over the past few weeks and had great fun yesterday investigating how to make a working circuit.
Next Thursday we will be visiting Unsworth Library where the children will have the opportunity to look around the library and ask the librarian some questions. We will also choose some stories to read. Please ensure your child wears suitable footwear and a waterproof coat.
If you have any questions about any of our enquiries or the trip please pop in to see me.
Year 1 have worked extremely hard in Literacy this week and produced some fantastic fantasy stories of their own! They have completed their collages based on Matisse’s snail collage, see the pictures in our gallery! They will continue to work on this skill in Art with Mrs Sherlock next week and will make a collage of their favourite fantasy character. Alongside this we will start our new enquiry ‘Are Illustrations Important in Fairy Tales?’ where we will focus on illustrations in Hans Christian Andersen books and read a range of fairy tales in Literacy. Our new enquiry page is up and running this might help your child with their homework this week!
Thank you to all who came along to our class assembly today. I am extremely proud of the children’s performances and the hard work and effort they put in. Thank you for providing some fabulous costumes and for helping your child to learn their lines. We have had an exciting couple of weeks learning about Neil Armstrong alongside reading many fantasy stories. I was amazed by the quality of the children’s homework posters about Neil Armstrong! Next week we will begin to plan and write our own fantasy stories and will be looking at Christopher Columbus and how he became famous. The children are currently working on the skill of collage in Art with Mrs Sherlock and will be producing some work based on the Artist Matisse. I will upload some photos of the children’s collages when they are complete. Please note show and tell will now be on a Thursday afternoon.
Thanks again for your support.
Welcome back and Happy New Year. I would just like to say thank you on behalf of all Year 1 staff for the lovely cards and presents we received. We have got a very exciting few weeks planned! This week we have started our new enquiry ‘Could I be an explorer?’ where we have begun to look at what an explorer does and will be comparing Neil Armstrong and Christopher Columbus. Alongside this we are looking at fantasy world stories and characters and will be working on creating our own stories. We look forward to seeing you all at our class assembly on Thursday 16th January.
I would like to say well done to all children for their fantastic performance in the nativity this week. Also I would like to say thankyou to parents for providing their costumes and coming along to support us! We have had a busy week writing some super stories based on ‘Peace At Last’. Next week we will be looking at different Christmas hymns and talking about how they make us feel.
We would just like to say a huge thank you to all who came to the coffee and cake fundraising event, also to those who couldn’t make it but made a donation. The children had great fun making the biscuits and eating them! They really enjoyed singing their song ‘the gift of love’. We raised a fantastic £107.93 which will go to ‘Save the Children’. This week this children will decide what they would like to spend the money on, we will let you know when we have decided.
Thanks again for all your support and kind donations
