Fabulous First week in Reception

The Reception children have had a fabulous week settling into school life meeting their year six buddies and making lots of new friends. They are off to a flying start writing their names and reciting their favourite rhymes as well as  learning some new ones. Everyone has really enjoyed having school lunch with most children settling into the routines well.

This week the children have been challenged to learn 4 nursery rhymes – word perfect! Certificates will be given to children who complete the challenge. We will be doing lots of practice in school , and this will be a fantastic opportunity to develop their speaking and listening skills at home.

Thank you so much for all your empty boxes and packaging, the children have really enjoyed using them to make models. Have a fabulous weekend see you on Monday.

Play guess the shape this weekend.

This week we have been very busy learning about 2d and 3d shape. In particular we have been learning to talk about corners, sides and faces when describing shapes. This weekend encourage your child to talk about the shapes they see in the environment and to use mathematical language to describe what they see. You could also ask them how to play ‘Guess the shape’ .

The children have also been very busy writing questions for Jack and the Giant. The writing in Reception is developing and lots of children enjoy writing as part of their play. We also talked about how some children don’t have much food and have to walk a long way to get water. We are encouraging the children to consider the lives of others and to understand some people lives are very different from their own.

Wishing you all a fantastic weekend.

Regards Michelle Duckworth

Spring has sprung

Spring has sprung the grass we planted has grown and the flowers in the garden are looking gorgeous. This week the children have really enjoyed drawings ‘observational drawing’ of the beautiful blossom tree outside our classroom. They will be displayed in the conservatory , shortly. Over the last couple of weeks we have been talking about ‘special places’ it would be lovely if you could talk about yours to your child and encourage them to talk about theirs. Thank you to all those parents who made comments on the Maths homework they have been very helpful. It was good to hear that children were using lots of different strategies to solve the problems. Have a fabulous weekend. Regards Michelle Duckworth

Jack and the Beanstalk

This week we have been reading Jack and the Beanstalk a traditional tale loved by all! Children have made character puppets  and have enjoyed retelling the story and writing about the main character Jack. It would be helpful if you could discuss the story with your child asking them to discuss what they know. One of our key questions in class at the moment is Who are the characters and what are they like? Next we are going to plant seeds and record their growth.

Children have enjoyed looking at each others ‘then and now’ photographs and discussing how they have grown and  what changes have taken place. We are all looking forward to seeing the display on the wall – please pop in to take a look.

A fabulous Reception assembly!

How fabulous was this morning’s assembly?! I was so impressed at all my scary pirates and their fabulous singing! They have worked so hard at making all their own props and learning lots and lots of words.  A huge thank you to all who attended and many thanks for all your kind wishes , cards and gifts. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with such a fabulous set of children and I am sure they will continue to flourish throughout the year.

I’ll come back and visit soon

Love Miss Ashton 😊

The Easter Story in Reception

In Reception, children are introduced to the world of religion in terms of special people, books, times, places and objects. They listen to and talk about stories. They are introduced to religious words and they reflect on their own feelings and experiences.

Our Spring focus in RE has been ‘Belonging’ and has focused on Christianity. Today the children have been listening to the Easter story. After listening to the story, the children asked many questions, which were answered sensitively. The children then made small world Jesus’ and ‘palm’ crosses made from paper. Have a look at the photos to see some of the children hard at work. Can your child tell you about Jesus and the Easter story?

Land Ahoy!!!

We start our new term as ‘Pirates’ in Reception! Our role play area is a pirate ship and we will be setting sail for lots of adventures!

For the next two weeks, the children are taking part in a whole school ‘Geography’ enquiry. The enquiry focus for Reception is to create and read basic maps in the local environment. As well as ‘Treasure Islands’ and ‘Distant Lands’, we will be using the school grounds and local environment to explore. We will be spending some time working with Year 1&2 also which will be a fabulous experience.

So to kick start our topic, we will be making Pirate hats and telescopes, eye patches and swords and setting off on a ‘Treasure Hunt’ around the school ground!

Arrrrgghhhhhh!!!

Busy in the bakery!

Our new topic ‘The Bakery’  has provided lots of creative activities and has uncovered lots of talented bakers!! Our role play area provides the opportunity to ‘bake’ wonderful cakes, buns and bread and even a spectacular wedding cake…. lots of tiers covered in ‘cream’…delicious!  The children have also been introduced to money in maths and have been ‘paying’ for cupcakes using pennies. This week, we will be baking some bread and decorating gingerbread men in the malleable area. An exciting week ahead…

Have a look at some of the activities that have taken place below:

Reception activity morning

The children have had a wonderful, busy last week in school. We completed our ‘ice’ investigation and also held a very busy activity morning with our parents and grandparents.  Everyone enjoyed making christmas wreaths, bird decorations and chocolate christmas pudding biscuits! I think the children especially enjoyed eating their pudding biscuits!!

Thank you for all your observations throughout the activity. These will be added to your child’s learning journey.

May I also take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support throughout our first term together and wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!

A visitor in our garden

Reception were very excited yesterday when an ‘Elf door’ appeared in the garden. They first found glitter all over the ground! This then led the children to a tiny door with a key….a tiny card was left from a ‘Christmas elf’!! The children then followed maps and followed the glitter trails that had been left. Very magical!!!
