Year 1 stars!

I would just like to say how proud I am of the hard work and effort the children put into our concerts this week. They were all fabulous and we have had a great time learning the songs and actions!

This week we have continued to look at instructions in literacy and we made a salt dough Christmas decoration. The children are in the process of independent writing instructions of how to make these. We will be finishing off the week watching the junior dress rehearsal.

Next week we will be having some Christmassy fun in the afternoons and redrafting our independent writing.

Canada, Christmas and Keeping Calm

Well we will be starting on acting rehearsals for our production of ‘Sleeping Beauty – the Ugly Truth’ next week.  The stage is up and it’s time for Y6 to start treading the boards and to add dramatic flair to those lines, which they have been hopefully learning.  There children took home ideas for costumes on Friday and should have shared these with you.  A number of the children had clearly already thought about their part and were quite organised with what they are planning to wear.  If anyone has any issues or problems with costumes, please let us know we have a limited supply of outfits in school but we will be able to arrange something.  Staff are also known to collect items out of their own or families wardrobes if needed!   Costumes need to be in for the 8th December as all the juniors will be getting together for their Dress Rehearsal.

In class we have started our new geography topic about Canada and the children had good fun carrying out a memory mapping activity to draw and label the continent of North America.  They have also shared some interesting ideas for things that they would like to find out and also shared some interesting facts that they already know about the country.  I would also like to thank all the children and family members who sent in items for our class display linked to our last topic about the  Battle of Britain.  Any items that the children send in linked to our topics are always appreciated.

In our PATHS lessons, over the past couple of weeks we have been looking at ways to keep calm and thinking about problem solving.  We have been exploring why it is important to take time to calm down and think about a plan before acting when we feel upset or stressed rather than losing our temper.  Next week, we will consider how our bodies react when we feel upset and ways to keep calm, including practising breathing techniques.

Last week, in literacy the children have been working hard to produce extended pieces of writing on their individual biographies and portraits of their chosen people.  We have had a wide selection of people including grandads, uncles, famous actors, singers and You Tube sensations to name a few.   The finished work will make an excellent display along our Junior corridor.

Within maths, the class have been working on developing formal, efficient methods for multiplication and division.  It is really important to have a good grasp of multiplication and division facts for this if they are to be confident and accurate when working independently.  The class will be looking at a maths website this week http://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/7-11-years/ , which is full of maths games for across the curriculum and is a great resource to access at home to support and reinforce learning from class.  Maths homework slips will be handed out this week as well explaining this further.

As I hope you can see the Year Six classroom is an interesting and busy place to be!

Our week so far

Year 1 have had a busy week so far this week, We have been using our subtraction skills to do lots of problem solving in many different ways such as spotting the odd one out from a group of number sentences. Finding change from 10p and 20p and playing a dice rolling game, the chidlren have had lots of fun so far! In literacy we have started to look at instructions, we will continue to look at these and will be making sandwiches and chocolate crispy cakes to help us with our learning about instructions!

We have continued to look at animals in our enquiry work this week, we have been discussing what different animals eat and sorting them under the headings omnivore, herbivore and carnivore. The chidlren have really enjoyed learning about animals and their features and different groups.

We have been working really hard on practising our Christmas songs for the concert, don’t forget our dress rehearsal is next Friday 2nd December, please send in your child’s outfit in a named carrier bag before then. I look forward to seeing you all at our concert!

Well done Year 1!

Autumn term

Our class assembly went well and the children worked really hard. Well done for such a fantastic performance. Straight on to the Christmas play now!! Autumn 2 term is always a busy term and the children have jumped straight into their learning. We have been learning about traditional tales in English, which has led to some fantastic role play and vocabulary. The children have really impressed me with their multiplication and division skills in maths, the next step will be to learn our times tables. In Science we have begun learning about Materials and link this to our English work. We have begun learning about the Great Fire of London for our history enquiry and have started by doing some research about London. Super effort Year 2!

Values enquiry afternoon

Last Friday the children had a great time moving around all the infant classrooms to carry out an activity linked to each of our school values, they had great fun playing games such as truth or lie, making happy face biscuits and lots more! I am really impressed with the homework they have brought back this week linked to the values, it is clear to see they have learnt a lot about our values through our enquiry work.

This week we have thought about our amazing animals work, where we have been learning about groups of animals and naming them such as mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish, birds and insects. We have been looking at the difference between them all and some similarities.

We have also been completing our independent reports on animals, the children are just in the process of redrafting them to go on our wall display. Well done Year 1, you have worked hard all week, we are very impressed!

Values enquiry

Year 1 made a great start back after half term, last week we had lots of fun learning about some of our school values. We used our collaging skills and created photo montages to show the value happiness. We talked about how peoples expressions change when they are happy. We made pic collages for the value friendship and played lots of team games to help us learn about how to be a good friend. We started to learn about honesty and talked about the importance of being an honest person, this week we will continue to look at this value further by learning about ‘The Boy Who Cried Wolf.’ We will also be using salt dough to make learning tools to focus on the value learning, we will use the skill of sculpture which we have been focusing on.

A busy and exciting week!

Some of these activities will be drama, role play, art work, we will keep you up to date on Tapestry and Twitter so keep looking out for our super work over the following days!

REMINDER- On Monday 1st November we will be visiting St George’s Church, we will use a doll to act out our own christening. Can you please ensure your child bring a waterproof coat and a jumper.

Amazing animals!

We have been working really hard last week on our ‘Amazing Animals’ enquiry. So far we have thought about animals similarities and differences. We have grouped animals according to these, the chidlren came up with some fantastic ideas. This week we will be looking a bit closer at animals and describing their basic structure. We will also think about whether they are a mammal, reptile, amphibian or fish, we will include pets in our thinking too. We have made some fabulous animal sculptures using play dough and used tools to mould and shape all the parts of the animals. This week we will investigate sculpture further by using clay to create animal sculptures.  In writing we have been thinking of lots of adjectives to describe animals and making word banks to help us create acrostic poems, the chidlren have found this challenging but fun! This week the chidlren will apply their own ideas to their poems and plan and write their own animal acrostic poems. Don’t forget tomorrow we have our photographer in school. I look forward to seeing you all for progress evening this week.

Many thanks

Scooter fun!

Another fantastic week in year 4 was concluded with a scooter session on Friday afternoon.

[easy-image-collage id=14688]

“This is the best day ever!” claimed a child as the scooter session was followed by computing. The children are really enjoying working on scratch – designing characters, new backgrounds and programming objects to move and speak.

We are looking forward to the progress evenings this week, allowing you to look through the children’s books and the work that they have done this half term!

Well Done Year 1!

I am really impressed with Year 1 and their transition to making a line on the playground, they were really excited to join the rest of the school last week and have now started to go into all assemblies. The children are very settled into Year 1 life and have been working extremely hard in all areas of their learning. Last week we planned our own stories in a familiar setting and have done a lovely job of writing these independently in our special independent writing journals! We also perfected our number bonds and this week will be solving some missing number box problems using the facts we know. In history we have been thinking about old toys and writing descriptions of them. This week we will spot the difference between toys in the past and now. We will also start looking at acrostic poems, these will be based on animals to link into our new theme ‘Amazing animals.’ The children’s homework I received last week was amazing, it’s lovely to see how much they have enjoyed completing their work at home, we have given out lots of house points for their hard work and effort.

Well done Year 1 keep up the hard work!
