A huge thank you!

A huge thank you to everyone who visited our Book Fair this week and who got involved in celebrating  Roald Dahl’s Birthday on Wednesday by bringing a prop, a book or wearing an entire costume!  It has been lovely to see so many children excited about buying and looking at the books on sale.  The fair and ‘Dress up for Dahl Day’ has been a fantastic success in creating a buzz around books and promoting reading for pleasure, with over £800 worth of books having been sold throughout the week.  Your generosity and support has meant that the school will receive nearly £500 worth of free books for the school library!  Our school library will be open from next Friday lunchtime and our newly appointed librarians or ‘Word Warriors’ as we like to call them will be on hand to help out!

Congratulations as well to our five raffle winners, ( from Reception, Y1, Y4  and Y6)  who all received and cashed in a £5 gift voucher today.

Fabulous First week in Reception

The Reception children have had a fabulous week settling into school life meeting their year six buddies and making lots of new friends. They are off to a flying start writing their names and reciting their favourite rhymes as well as  learning some new ones. Everyone has really enjoyed having school lunch with most children settling into the routines well.

This week the children have been challenged to learn 4 nursery rhymes – word perfect! Certificates will be given to children who complete the challenge. We will be doing lots of practice in school , and this will be a fantastic opportunity to develop their speaking and listening skills at home.

Thank you so much for all your empty boxes and packaging, the children have really enjoyed using them to make models. Have a fabulous weekend see you on Monday.

YR moving up morning!

I had a fabulous morning with the Year Reception children for moving up morning, they enjoyed talking about themselves, joining in some fun activities and getting to know the Year 1 classroom. The children were all brilliantly behaved and I am looking forward to them moving up in September. Have a look at what we got up to!

Play guess the shape this weekend.

This week we have been very busy learning about 2d and 3d shape. In particular we have been learning to talk about corners, sides and faces when describing shapes. This weekend encourage your child to talk about the shapes they see in the environment and to use mathematical language to describe what they see. You could also ask them how to play ‘Guess the shape’ .

The children have also been very busy writing questions for Jack and the Giant. The writing in Reception is developing and lots of children enjoy writing as part of their play. We also talked about how some children don’t have much food and have to walk a long way to get water. We are encouraging the children to consider the lives of others and to understand some people lives are very different from their own.

Wishing you all a fantastic weekend.

Regards Michelle Duckworth

Spring has sprung

Spring has sprung the grass we planted has grown and the flowers in the garden are looking gorgeous. This week the children have really enjoyed drawings ‘observational drawing’ of the beautiful blossom tree outside our classroom. They will be displayed in the conservatory , shortly. Over the last couple of weeks we have been talking about ‘special places’ it would be lovely if you could talk about yours to your child and encourage them to talk about theirs. Thank you to all those parents who made comments on the Maths homework they have been very helpful. It was good to hear that children were using lots of different strategies to solve the problems. Have a fabulous weekend. Regards Michelle Duckworth

Jack and the Beanstalk

This week we have been reading Jack and the Beanstalk a traditional tale loved by all! Children have made character puppets  and have enjoyed retelling the story and writing about the main character Jack. It would be helpful if you could discuss the story with your child asking them to discuss what they know. One of our key questions in class at the moment is Who are the characters and what are they like? Next we are going to plant seeds and record their growth.

Children have enjoyed looking at each others ‘then and now’ photographs and discussing how they have grown and  what changes have taken place. We are all looking forward to seeing the display on the wall – please pop in to take a look.

Sports Relief 2016

On Friday 18th March, each class took part in a sponsored race outside. The children were given a time limit to complete the events as a class. Events included skipping, press ups, hula hooping, bench presses, sit ups and ladder jumps! Music was also played to keep the children motivated. Some children even managed to surprise themselves with just how long they kept going for! It was a great day had by all, including me!

The ladies in the office counted up all the money that had been collected over the past few weeks and we managed to raise an impressive £500.72! Thank you so much to everybody who contributed towards this amount.

A fabulous Reception assembly!

How fabulous was this morning’s assembly?! I was so impressed at all my scary pirates and their fabulous singing! They have worked so hard at making all their own props and learning lots and lots of words.  A huge thank you to all who attended and many thanks for all your kind wishes , cards and gifts. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with such a fabulous set of children and I am sure they will continue to flourish throughout the year.

I’ll come back and visit soon

Love Miss Ashton 😊

The Easter Story in Reception

In Reception, children are introduced to the world of religion in terms of special people, books, times, places and objects. They listen to and talk about stories. They are introduced to religious words and they reflect on their own feelings and experiences.

Our Spring focus in RE has been ‘Belonging’ and has focused on Christianity. Today the children have been listening to the Easter story. After listening to the story, the children asked many questions, which were answered sensitively. The children then made small world Jesus’ and ‘palm’ crosses made from paper. Have a look at the photos to see some of the children hard at work. Can your child tell you about Jesus and the Easter story?

Land Ahoy!!!

We start our new term as ‘Pirates’ in Reception! Our role play area is a pirate ship and we will be setting sail for lots of adventures!

For the next two weeks, the children are taking part in a whole school ‘Geography’ enquiry. The enquiry focus for Reception is to create and read basic maps in the local environment. As well as ‘Treasure Islands’ and ‘Distant Lands’, we will be using the school grounds and local environment to explore. We will be spending some time working with Year 1&2 also which will be a fabulous experience.

So to kick start our topic, we will be making Pirate hats and telescopes, eye patches and swords and setting off on a ‘Treasure Hunt’ around the school ground!

Arrrrgghhhhhh!!!
