Great start back Year Six!

Well Year Six have made a great start to the spring term.  It has been great to see so many children feeling confident and happy to share their knowledge of fraction equivalences; they have clearly been working on learning those facts.  Thank you.  Learning number facts is key to confidence and achieving within mathematics.  These facts have really helped the children this week as we have begun to move onto comparing, converting and adding some fractions.  Some children have also moved onto multiplying them as well.

This week our class was also presented with an attendance certificate as we had the highest attendance in December! The certificate is displayed with pride on our classroom door.  We have all agreed to try to win it again this month and are hoping for a healthy 2017.

In Literacy, we are continuing to work on creating warning stories and to explore how writers create suspense in stories. Part of this has involved carefully looking at the different types of words that writers use.  The class have been asked to think about this also when they  are choosing books to read independently at home.   This week, the class have also been experimenting with an app called ‘Explain Everything’, which they have used to explain a suspense scenario.  As well as being good fun ( especially when recording sound such as creaking doors) it really reinforces our learning in literacy.

The class have also been working on improving fitness levels in our dance topic of 1960’s steps such as : the swim, the twist and the mashed potato.  We will also be looking at: the funky chicken, the monkey, the pony and shaking our tail feathers. Eventually, the children will create their own dance inspired by 1960’s dance steps.  Over the next few weeks, different children will have the opportunity to lead our warm ups at the beginning of the session.  I had a number of volunteers keen to create something to share and  I am excited to see how they get on………

Welcome back!

The children made a great start back in class last week. We have started thinking about our new enquiry ‘Unsworth explorers’ where we will use our historical skills to compare famous explorers in the past. In maths we are revisiting place value and will be concentrating on multiplication and di vision this half term. In literacy we have started reading lots of fantasy stories and the children have enjoyed picking out the magic objects  and talking about the interesting character and settings. We also have our class assessmbly to look forward to next Thursday morning, 26th January. We look forward to seeing you all there!

A Musical New Year!

I must start the New Year by congratulating all the children who were involved in the Bury Hospice Carol Service at Bury Parish Church. The Hospice have written a letter of thanks to each school, and the total raised from this event was £2000.  This is an amazing amount of money and thanks go to all the parents and staff who supported this event.  The choral group also sang beautifully when we took them to Spurr House.  The children thoroughly enjoy performing for the elderly people and we will definitely be making a return visit before the end of the school year.

This term I will continue to work with Y2 and 3, teaching ocarina and recorder. Brass lessons and Fidler music will recommence from January 10th.  Please remember to bring your instrument to school each Tuesday.  As the weather is due to turn quite cold, please do not leave Brass instruments in car boots for long periods as the valves will freeze up!

In our Big Sing we will be learning songs about Technology and Internet safety, not forgetting to celebrate the Chinese New Year through song at the end of January. Always check the school ‘Twitter’ as we often share the children’s singing for you to enjoy.

A new singing group will be formed for any interested children in Years 5 and 6 and more information will follow about this in due course. We are hoping to collaborate with some local school choirs before the end of the school year and share our joy of singing with our neighbouring schools.

If you have any queries or questions about Music at Unsworth, please feel free to pop in and have a chat, I am here every Tuesday.

Our first app of the month 2017!

This is a great web based site and  app to encourage children to create a research or information board all about a given topic, theme or in response to a question. It allows children to collect information from the internet and pin it onto virtual bulletin boards using a simple drag-and-drop system. Videos, text, links, images can be added to a board and organized there, like a page full of Post-it notes. You can add as many notes to a wall as you like and it just grows in size! More than one person can contribute to a Padlet wall, opening the door to teamwork and group projects. Padlets can be shared via social media, through blogs or embedded within a QR code. Click here to find out more from the app store.

We will finish off our week with some fun and games as a celebration of all of our hard work and filling our marble jar again! We are all very excited and the children have worked extremely hard over this term, they should be proud of their work! I am sure Santa will be happy with all of the children on his good list!

Year 1 stars!

I would just like to say how proud I am of the hard work and effort the children put into our concerts this week. They were all fabulous and we have had a great time learning the songs and actions!

This week we have continued to look at instructions in literacy and we made a salt dough Christmas decoration. The children are in the process of independent writing instructions of how to make these. We will be finishing off the week watching the junior dress rehearsal.

Next week we will be having some Christmassy fun in the afternoons and redrafting our independent writing.

Puppet Pals App

This is a fabulous upgrade to the first puppet pals, with lots more functionality. Both children and adults can unlock creativity with this easy to use and highly addictive interactive puppet show! It allows children to create high quality cartoons from their imaginations and means that stories, thoughts and ideas can be brought to life. A great addition, is that the creators can even star in the show along side the built-in characters!

For class teachers and teaching assistants there is lots of potential for this app, such as allowing children to  act out historical events, practice language skills, or deliver a killer book report. The cartoons that children can make really bring learning to life through digital literacy. The finished projects are easily shared to be watched by others (share via email or simply copy the video file to your computer and distribute how you see fit) Have a go and let us know what you think!

Digital Issues!

Our e-Warriors have been hard at work in their classes over the last couple of weeks creating digital problem boxes for children and adults to post their technology problems inside. Our Y6 eWarriors have also been busy filming each eWarrior and this week they will turn the films into QR codes for our hall display. Mr McWhirter gave his first technician session last week and the eWarrior have started to complete their Ipad tasks to ensure that they are all up to date and have the apps organised into the right places. Our next step is to start to work on a specific technology project in each class and one of our Y6 digital leaders, who has been supporting his class mates has learnt how to check that the correct printer and password is enabled on the netbooks, so he will be training the rest of the eWarriors this week! We will keep you up to date on how that goes!

Autumn term

Our class assembly went well and the children worked really hard. Well done for such a fantastic performance. Straight on to the Christmas play now!! Autumn 2 term is always a busy term and the children have jumped straight into their learning. We have been learning about traditional tales in English, which has led to some fantastic role play and vocabulary. The children have really impressed me with their multiplication and division skills in maths, the next step will be to learn our times tables. In Science we have begun learning about Materials and link this to our English work. We have begun learning about the Great Fire of London for our history enquiry and have started by doing some research about London. Super effort Year 2!
