September 2011 Unsworth Primary Newsletter

Welcome to the first newsletter of the school year.

We have had a very busy start to the term and the children have settled really well into their new classes.

This week we held our Welcome Assembly for children new to the school.. As usual it was a lovely assembly and our Y6 pupils were very proud to officially welcome their YR “buddies”. Well done Y6 on your excellent start with your extra responsibilities this year. We are very proud of you.

On Friday some children from Y4, Y5 and Y6 will be leaving early for our first ever residential trip to France. They will travel on Friday and spend the weekend in Northern France with Mrs Moseley, Miss Sinclair, Miss Costin and Mr French at a PGL Centre. As well as PGL activities they will experience French culture and visit a boulangerie and a snail farm! We hope you have a lovely time! We will send texts out to parents of those children on the trip letting you know how they are getting on.

Hopefully by now you have had the opportunity to meet your child’s new class teacher at our “Meet the teacher” sessions last week. If you have any concerns about anything connected with your child’s learning or well-being please do not hesitate to come in and see us.

School Car Park

Please remember for safety reasons parents should not use the school car park unless they have written permission from the Headteacher.

If you drive into the car park and down Blackley Close at the beginning or end of the day you are posing a risk to our children.

Whilst we work on road safety with the children they do not always take care on Blackley Close so please avoid parking there . Please keep the corner of Chadderton Drive and Parr Lane clear so that the Crossing Patrol has a clear view down both roads.

Special permits have been issued for the use of the car park.

Only a few permits have been issued and staff will challenge anyone using the car park without permission.

Well Done Assembly

Every two weeks we hold our Well Done Assembly. Each class teacher nominates up to four children for their good work, their attitude to learning or their good behaviour. They are given a sticker and a postcard to take home and the whole school is told about their achievement.

A record of nominations is kept on our “Well Done” table in the school hall. We also award the “Teamwork Trophy” to one child at each Well Done Assembly for their contribution to their class and/or the wider school. They are awarded the trophy and a special treat for their class such as an extra playtime.

Class Assemblies

Class assemblies will take place on the following dates:

  • Wed 5th Oct at 9.10am Y5
  • Wed 12th Oct at 9.10am Y6
  • Wed 9th Nov at 9.10am Y2
  • Wed 23rd Nov at 9.10am Y2—this is a change of date

Refreshments will be served after each assembly.

International School Award

We are very proud to announce that our school has been awarded the British Council’s prestigious International School Award in recognition of our work to bring the world into our classrooms.

During last year our staff and pupils worked on a number of international projects including developing links with partner schools in India andFrance; studying the art, food, music and dance styles of different cultures and much more.

Many of these events were open to parents and carers and we had a great response from those of you who attended.

Through this work our aim has been to develop the children’s understanding of other cultures and places, but also understand and develop their own skills so they can live and work as “global citizens”.

We will be continuing to enrich our curriculum through further international projects this year so that we embed an international ethos throughout our school.

Well done, everyone for all your hard work.

Mrs. Ali

PTA AGM

The PTA AGM will be held Wednesday 5th October at 7.30pm in the school hall. All parents and carers and school staff are encouraged to attend this first meeting.
This term we have arranged a number of events and fundraisers including the 100 Club, discos for the infants and the juniors, Christmas cards and calendar and photographs and DVDs of the Christmas productions.

As well as allowing us to take the children on additional trips we would like to develop our IT equipment in the hall this year. We would like to raise enough for a new sound system and lights to enhance our musical and drama productions.

If you would like to be involved we would love to hear from you and look forward to seeing you at the AGM.

Reception 2012

Is your child due to start school in September 2012? If so you need to put their name down on our list NOW!

Children born between 1st September 2007 and 31st August 2008 will start school in September 2012.

Priority places go to siblings of children already in school. Details of the process can be found online at www.bury.gov.uk/admissionsprimary.

We are having Open Days for parents of Reception Class 2012 on the following days and times:

  • 11/10/11 2pm
  • 13/10/11 10.30am
  • 3/11/11 10.30am

Please contact Mrs Lancashire at school to put your child’s name down or to attend one of the Open Days.

Other Notices

Children using the Before and After School Club need a written letter from parents if going home with someone else.

Dinner money this year will be £9.50 per week. Please make sure dinner money is paid each Monday and sent in an envelope. Cheques should be made out to Bury MBC. The kitchens require two weeks notice for children to change from dinners to sandwiches as food is ordered two weeks in advance.

If your child needs medication in school please ensure you have completed the necessary paperwork with Mrs Lancashire. If your child has an injury requiring a plaster cast a risk assessment must be completed before they return to school—please contact Mrs Reynolds.

Please ensure ALL clothing and equipment is marked with your child’s name.
