Reflections of the School Council

This year’s School Councillors have been fantastic! They have been so hardworking and reliable. The Councillors have listened to their classes about ideas for school and have spent a lot of time making things happen, such as Red Nose Day, the Parking Charter and discussions about the cloakrooms. Well done to all of you! Here are some reflections on their year:

I enjoyed having meetings with Mrs Reynolds because it made me feel heard,it also made me feel important in helping the school.

Being a school councillor has made me feel important because we got to have meetings with Mrs Reynolds and have our say in what could improve the school. I liked doing the tuck shop at break time as well as the parking safety topic we did.

This year my favourite part of school councilling is feeling proud that I got to give ideas to make the school better. But overall I loved everything!

Boy’s football quarter final: Greenhill 3-6 Unsworth

The Unsworth boy’s team played fantastically well today as a team. We took a team of 10 players to Greenhill; it was a tough decision to only select a starting 7.

This was the quarter final match, having previously defeated Holcombe Brook and Chesham. Unsworth got off to a strong start, passing the ball well and created lots of scoring opportunities. Unsworth took a deserved 3-0 lead into half time, as well as hitting the woodwork 3 times!

The second half followed suit as the team raced into a 6-1 lead. The whole squad contributed to a collective team effort although there were some excellent individual performances too. This was evident as there were 6 different scorers – a few brilliant strikes and team goals!

A lot of credit must go to Greenhill who didn’t give up and scored 2 late consolation goals. Final score Greenhill 3-6 Unsworth.

We eagerly await the semi final draw! Congratulations once again to the team.

Greater Manchester School Games – 21st March

IMG_2606

What a fantastic day! The children thoroughly enjoyed the day and the experience at sportscity, playing tag rugby at a superb venue.

The event started with an opening ceremony consisting of music, dancing and special guests… Olympic gold medalists! The children, along with nearly 2000 others representing a variety of sports, participated from the stands dancing and singing away. Hundreds of balloons were released and that signalled the start of the event.

The rugby was the main event for us and the children all played well as a team against the very best schools in Greater Manchester. We won 1 (4-3), drew 1 (2-2) and lost 2 (0-2, 1-5) of our 12 minute group matches, braving cold conditions and high quality opponents who had obviously played rugby for a while.  For many of our children, tag rugby was a new experience this year and they have excelled. They are developing their skills as individuals and as a team, whilst also improving their tactical knowledge. We have some very talented athletes at Unsworth, who consistently demonstrated fair play and respect for others.

Hopefully, we will return again next year!

Red Nose Day

The School Councillors are pleased to announce the arrival of Red Noses! From tomorrow they will be sold around school at the cost of £1. Watch out for School Councillors selling them at playtime.

Did you know it takes 17 muscles to smile? The children at Unsworth are facing the challenge of smiling for two minutes or more on Friday morning. Please support them and help them raise money for Red Nose Day by donating any loose change you may have.  The School Councillors will be on collection duty on the yard this week. They are committed to raising money for this worthwhile cause and are hoping to raise a lot of smiles doing so!

Competitive sport and clubs

Competitive sport

This 2016/17 year has seen Unsworth competing in a plethora of sports against other schools. The children are developing their knowledge in teamwork, rules, skills and always represent the school well, showing respect to fellow competitors and officials.

This year the school has already competed in a variety of sports including:

  • Boys Football, Girls Football and Tag Rugby

and have these competitions to look forward to:

  • Cross Country ( boys and girls teams) – BJSSA Cross Country events scheduled at (Tues 28th Feb) Broadoak High School, (Tues 8th March) St Gabriel’s RC High School, (Tues 14th March) Derby High School and (Wed 29th March) Bury Athletics track –  Feb-March
  • Netball competition – fixtures arranged Feb-April
  • Athletics – summer
  • Cricket – summer
  • Rounders – summer
  • Y5 5-a-side football -summer

as well as continued football and tag rugby events.

We are passionate at Unsworth to offer children these competitive sporting opportunities. We want every child to enjoy sport, strive to achieve their personal best and work hard as a team. The experiences gained of success, challenge and risk-taking from sports, and how the children respond to these, can only help in all aspects of life.

Clubs

At Unsworth, we value the thoughts of the children, ask the children which sports they like to participate in and which clubs they would like. A survey is going to be generated by Mr Garside to ask the children which is their favourite current club and what other clubs they would like to do, which are not currently on offer.

Many thanks must go to QFirst for all their lunchtime and after school clubs delivered this year, including: cheerleading, dance, tennis, basketball and multi sports.

Additionally, Unsworth have a dedicated staff, who are working as a team, to provide lunch time and after school clubs in: table tennis, tag rugby, football, netball, dance and cross country. As well as this, there will be a further variety of sports in the summer including: judo, cricket, rounders and athletics.

Not only this, Y6 children ‘Sports Crew’ have delivered sessions to Y2 and are moving on to Y1 next. They are learning every session, making improvements to their organisation and are getting better every week. The Y2 children really seemed to enjoy the sessions designed by the Sports Crew, especially the kick ball game.
