Learn to Succeed

Year Five and Six had a fantastic time on Friday with Tim Hall, who ran a workshop throughout the day all based around ‘Learning to Succeed’.  Hopefully, you managed to see the various tweets surrounding the events that were sent through the day.

The whole day explored some important ideas:

  • Why did you come to school today?
  • You can learn anything if you want to!
  • EFFORT always leads to results
  • We learn through following a process
  • Life is a lot easier if you get on with everyone

All of this was done in a fun and highly interactive way.  The children participated in building teepees, taking part in a name game, recording their thoughts about what success means to them, making paper aeroplanes, learning the steps of how to juggle and the ‘pen trick’.  The children as usual were a credit to the school and Tim commented on the high levels of perseverance and listening skills of the pupils that took part.  Thank you very much to the PTA, who funded this experience for our pupils.

Safer Internet 2017

At the beginning of February we will be focussing on the annual Safer Internet Day with our children. This is a global event and its theme is ‘Be the Change: Unite for a better Internet.’ Hundreds of organisations get involved in the day to help promote the safe, responsible use of digital technology for children and young people.

Safer Internet Day, 2017 will explore the power of image-both for positive and negative-in digital youth culture. The Internet can be a powerful tool. Children and young people can share images and videos to communicate and express their creativity. However, there can also be pressures, risks and potential negative consequences.

In our work with the children, we want to help them to build the skills and confidence to use images and videos safely and creatively but also ensure that they know how to have a positive time online. The Safer Internet resources will be used across the school to raise some of these issues in an age-appropriate way with all classes. Our e-warriors will be leading the way with this work.

In order to prepare for SID 2017, our assembly themes so far this term have been about technology and the Internet. We have discussed the idea of technology with the children and the idea that it is ‘anything that has been created by people’s ideas’ as one child said in our first assembly! The children have also discussed the many ways in which they use digital technology. Many of them are digital experts and sometimes we can be surprised, as teachers and parents, about just how much the children know and the various platforms they are using. It is vital that we help the children to do this safely.

Welcome Squishy!

Year 4 have a new member in their class!

Today, we welcomed a new member to our class. After a class vote, it was decided to name the teddy ‘Squishy’. A child will be selected each week and they will take the teddy home along with a book. I am looking forward to seeing the adventures that Squishy goes on. It is privileged to be a part of our wonderful Year 4 class!

Besides this, year 4 have been working incredibly hard again this week solving tricky addition and subtraction problems, researching the Romans, describing characters in their writing, and creating food chains in science, amongst other things.

Additionally, year 4 have voted for their school council representatives.  Each child voted for 1 boy and 1 girl after the candidates each gave an excellent speech demonstrating why they would be good at being a school councillor. The results are in but will be revealed next week…

A great start to the year for Year 4!

Year 4 have had a brilliant start to the year. They have settled into the routines of the class and are producing work to a high standard. We have a great set of children in this class who listen, work hard, are good friends and enjoy learning. They have been a pleasure to teach.

Some of our lessons this half term consist of:

Roman Britain in History

Learning about the teeth and digestive system in Science.

Explanation texts in Literacy

Although we have been focussing on place value (ordering numbers, rounding numbers etc.), this question below was a challenge on the homework. It was designed to make the children think about what exactly the graph shows and to make up a story. A great example for an answer was:

“A boy dug a hole for 20 minutes to a depth of 40cm because he wanted to put a small plant in it. After that, he had a rest for 10 minutes whilst he ate some lunch. Between 30-35 minutes his dog came along and filled in 10 cm of the hole. The boy realised this and dug the hole back to 40cm. For the next 10 minutes, the plant was put in the hole and the soil was placed back in. The depth of the hole returned to 0cm.”

Back to school

Welcome back to school, everybody! It is always a pleasure to see the children on the first morning back-proud in their new school uniforms and ready for the challenges of the new school year. Our new Reception Class children have arrived and have settled in beautifully. This year we have introduced a new app called Tapestry which we will use to document the activities and learning of our new class. This will be accessible to parents and carers and there is a facility to comment back. This, together with our Twitter feed and our website, means that our school community has never been as well informed as to what is happening across the school day.

Prior to the children starting, our staff attended a couple of training days in order to prepare for the coming year and to re-visit our core values and principles. We reminded ourselves of the meaning of our school motto, Together We Build Understanding, and what this means to our children. We know how important quality teaching and learning is for a young person’s future, but we also discussed the importance of their well-being and happiness. It is interesting that happiness and friendship were two of the values which received most votes in our recent poll. This year we will use the five core values, as selected by our school community, as our assembly themes-happiness, respect, honesty, friendship and learning.

It has also been a pleasure to welcome back some of our Y6 leavers this week. Many of them have visited after school to show us their new uniforms, their homework journals and to tell us how they have settled into their new schools. They understand the importance of our values and know they will always be part of our community and are happy to pop in and chat.

On Tuesday 20th September, we will be officially welcoming our new pupils into school during our Welcome Assembly. Any child new to the school, including all of our Reception Class, will be welcomed by our Y6 pupils. All parents and carers of pupils new to school are invited to attend. The assembly starts at 9:10am.

On behalf of the staff and governors, I would like to thank you for your on-going support. I have always felt that it is a privilege to be part of our community and I hope you will continue to feel the same way too as we move forward this year.

Goodbye, Y6

Every year, at this time, we wonder at how quickly the school year passes. For those of us who work in the school, this is a regular occurrence. For our children it can be both an exciting and a difficult time. Some children look forward to the adventure of a new class whilst others worry about the change. For our Y6 pupils this week is the start of a momentous change in their lives; the step from primary to secondary education.

On Monday morning, they will be inviting their family members into school to see their final assembly. They have been working hard with their teacher, Ms Sinclair, in order to plan what they want to express as they leave our school. It is always a very emotional experience for everyone and one where all the adults in their lives, both at home and in school, feel incredible pride when they see who they have become as young people.

We hope that as they leave the school this week and as they develop in the next few years into young adults, that they carry with them the values we have promoted in partnership with our families. If you speak with any one of them you notice how able they are to articulate what it means to be part of the Unsworth community. They can talk about ‘Together We Build Understanding’ and what it means to them. They can talk about our core values, recently selected through a democratic vote. They have been successful in terms of their academic achievement this year but their qualities as people and the values they hold and demonstrate every day will stay with them in their future. It is that which gives us the most satisfaction.

Someone once said that to achieve excellence you should:

 

“Risk more than others think is safe.
Care more than others think is wise.
Dream more than others think is practical.
Expect more than others think is possible.”

 

Taking safe risks, caring deeply, dreaming about possibilities and having high expectations of yourself and others is what we are all about. Our wonderful Y6 pupils are equipped to move on to the next part of their lives and we wish them well. Good luck, Y6, we will miss you!

Olympic enquiry fun!

It’s been such a busy time with so much going on in school. The children have been working incredibly hard…creating amazing batik artwork, writing persuasive letters to Mrs Reynolds and thinking about our Olympic enquiry.

We started the week with writing letters to Mrs Reynolds persuading her to consider replacing exercise books with iPads and allowing the children to record their work digitally. The children had very strong views why this would be a great idea and were able to confidently present the point of view through their letters. The children will present their letters to Mrs Reynolds over the next week and we are eager to see if we can persuade her with our letters!

Our whole school enquiry has also begun  and we spent some time discussing what the Olympic values are. We attended the opening ceremony which was an exciting affair for everyone. The children enjoyed taking part in the singing and listening to the teachers playing the samba instruments!

Y5 were given the value “equality” to consider as part of their enquiry work. Initial discussions around “what is equality” raised some interesting thoughts. The children come up with some excellent ideas as to how they could represent equality through various mediums, including photography, drawing and music. We spent the latter part of the week creating some lovely work including batik flags, photo montages and writing our own acrostic poems.

The children also visited Y6 this week on their official move up morning. Although the children have been working with Miss Sinclair over the last few week on various guided reading activities, they were very excited about being Y6 for the day. From sitting on the benches in assembly to being prefects at break time…the wait is nearly over for our Y5s and they’ll be off being our next Y6 class!

What a trip!

Year 2 visited Martin Mere today to find out more about different habitats. When the children arrived they explored pond habitats in the raised pond beds and then walked up to Plum wood to find out all about woodland habitats. It was great to see the children exploring the different habitats and finding different animals to look at. Bobby even discovered a toad in the woods, which got lots of gasps! After lunch the children let off some steam in the play area and then went off on an hour walk around the wetland paths. During their exploration of the Mere the children experienced the “Wild Walk”, stepping stones and Weird but Wonderful bird zone. All of the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves and were a credit to the school. Delving into the past

Year 2 have really got into their historical enquiry and as you can see from the picture to the left, their working wall is being added to on a daily basis. This week the children focussed on uncovering more information about Mary Seacole and also spent time comparing the two women. This is a real important historical skill for children to develop, as it allows them to think about the actions people have taken and the effects that these actions had.

I was really impressed with some of the similarities and differences that the children found and it was great to see how collaboratively the children worked. The children are going to use all of their historical research and findings to write their final report, as they have been building up to this during our English lessons over the past three weeks.

In our art lessons, the children have been exploring Aboriginal art and this week they spent time with Mrs Rhodes creating Aboriginal inspired patterns, whilst also developing their understanding of what printing is through creating their own printing blocks. The children looked into how the Aborigines used symbols to tell stories known as Dream Stories. Their next step after looking at the symbols was to create their own stories and then choose one symbol to turn into a printing block. They then used their printing block to add to the whole class art work.

During maths this week, the children have been developing their reasoning and mental arithmetic skills. The children are really starting to unpick problems and puzzles, whilst also developing their ability to explain their thinking. Have a look at the gallery below to see our week in pictures!

Busy, busy, busy

It’s been a busy few weeks in Year 5.  The children returned to school fresh after the Easter break and raring to go.

We made an active start to our Science enquiry, where we will be looking at how plants grow.  We had fun clearing out the overgrown Edible Garden and preparing the ground.  It was interesting to hear the children share their own gardening stories and the types of things they have previously planted with various family members.  We chatted about the different mini beasts we found and different types of weeds pulled out.

We planted a number of seeds indoors too, and will transfer them outdoors once they have grown.  The children are enjoying watering and caring for the seedlings that have now sprouted.   The gardens are now all planted; we have onions, carrots, beans, tomatoes, spinach, pumpkins, cauliflowers and much more!  Fingers crossed for some good weather over the next few weeks.

In literacy, the children have been busy reading a number of stories from different cultures.  We watched a few short films too which really helped us understand the detail we need to include when writing our own stories.  The children were able to identify that they needed to include detail about the “human and physical geography” to really capture the culture of another country.  It’s great to see that children are making links between different curriculum areas and transferring understanding.

We ended the week with recaping our enquiry work in History and how Unsworth has changed over the last 100 years.  We then discussed and predicted what changes might take place over the next 50-100 years.  The children had some amusing ideas about how life might change and the types of facilities that might become available.  They then redesigned buildings, created some of their own and began remodelling the map of the local area.
